Edward’s mobile phone was ringing, he checked the caller ID, it was his father. His relationship with his father had always been strained. There were multiple problems with it, but what it essentially came down to was that his father was part of the baby boomer generation and he was part of the millenials. The baby boomer generation had had the world handed to them. In different continents, of course, and his family had been living in Australia. Which meant that the conditions that his father was brought up in were extremely beneficial for that period of time. They had grown up in conditions where everything was industrious which meant there were so many jobs that existed at that period of time, that it was very difficult to find one’s self unemployed. They had also inherited the wealth and bounty of the land which meant that the economy was in good condition. The lifestyle was also related to a happy-go-lucky type of lifestyle, where one could abandon a job and pick up another pretty easily. A university education actually meant something at that period of time as knowledge was still being accumulated through the invention of several fields.

Now, what had seemed to pass over through that period of time from when the baby boomers gained control to the period of time that the millenials were born… Well, let’s see… First of all they spat on the Vietnam Veterans who had returned from war. Thus creating a split between the military and the civilians. The civilians spat on them and called them baby boomers when the Vietnam Veterans believed and were brought up to believe that they were going to be treated as heroes. The heroes of the time were not those men who risked their lives in mortal combat, attempting to carry out the plans of their country. No, the heroes were the anti-war activists who attended rock concerts, consumed drugs and said they were all doing so in the name of ‘bringing the troops back home.’ Meanwhile, the soldiers lives were scarred with events of post-traumatic stress from combat and coming back to a country that didn’t hold a position for them in the greater scheme of things because, ‘they had lost that war.’ That left a lot of individuals pissed off and abandoning the idea of a national identity and community care. So there was that…

Then, there was the decision to sell out most of our industries at a manufacturing level to foreign powers where cheaper labour could be produced. Yes, they all profited from those decisions and it meant for a long period of time that they could produce products at a cheaper rate. But what was lost in those decisions? Well, the manufacturing capabilities so the corporations sold out jobs at a national level. Which turned into unemployment and a lack of skills because individuals were not practiced at work in the workforce. But hey, for a while the companies maximized their profits and a lot of people were able to live a lifestyle of wealth and excess. So there was that…

Then, there was the decision to not transfer from fossil fuels to clean energy. That’s right. The companies that existed because they were continuously pumping wealth into the economy with the creation of supply and demand, where everyone was in a constant demand for petroleum products. That meant that the population of Earth was pumping exhaust and other fumes directly up into the atmosphere, creating waves of pollution that was like a slick oily hand going out and seizing the globe. So there was that…

Then, in the face of other factors, drug consumption increased as the individuals in these countries of privilege began to live a life of excess and gluttony. Like supply and demand economics, in the face of so much adversity, those who were intelligent enough to realize the situation ultimately decided to live an existence that was focused on escapism from reality. A general feeling of apathy seized the populace and so people began to destroy themselves. So there was that…

And then there was the glitz and glamour of the movies. So many individuals focusing themselves and their skill development of becoming a ‘celebrity’. So many individuals, lacking proper guidance in their own lives from their own parents looked to guidance from these celebrity figures. And these celebrity figures were little more than human and being so human, could not conceivably guide all of mankind in order to solve all of the problems that had been created. So there was a great period of delusion and disillusionment with the way individuals should live their lives. So there was that…

Then there was a series of financial crashes that made several businesses bankrupt. Which once again resulted in the loss of jobs for many individuals who were being paid less than average. Which resulted in the difficulty for individuals to find any sort of employment what-so-ever. So there was that…

And there was the lack of reason in politics. Politicians are usually reserved for a reason and that reason is international diplomacy. So there was that…

And then there were several institutions created as a pyramid scheme type plan. The pyramid scheme plan was that the exploitation of the young in order to serve the needs of the elder. Universities existed in this fashion as they were educating a workforce where the jobs didn’t exist in that workforce to ever find themselves in employment. Non-government organisations existed in this fashion because they relied on the continuation of whatever problem existed to remain employed. So the NGOs weren’t fixing these problems and either were the governments, otherwise they’d all be out of the job. So basically what they were essentially doing were selling promises. So there was that…

And then there was the production of technology that made many previous vocations redundant. Computers, electronics. The internet allowed for piracy and freeware that were the products of many hopeful businesses that eventuated in a non-profit. So there was that…

And then there was the creation of an underclass through the creation of mental health services. These mental health services under the institution of psychiatry and mental disability claimed that none of the other problems existed. That all of these problems that were facts of history were all just part of mental illness. Once again creating another pyramid scheme in which individuals were paid money to help people. But all that they seemed to do was watch and witness the problems while being paid their nice tidy pay cheque. Kind of like being paid money to watch people starve. Enough said, but the list could probably go on.

It certainly hadn’t been Edward’s generation, that had done this to the subsequent generations. For some of these problems, he hadn’t been alive, much less in power. Edward was a schizophrenic man who had been on the receiving end of these problems and found himself underemployed with little hope of any future apart from the tireless workings of his own endeavour. His father on the other hand, being born into the generation that he had been born into, had done quite well for himself. He owned two homes. One of which he had inherited through his mother. The other that had been the family home that he had received in a family divorce. And he was in full time employment as University Lecturer, participating in the pyramid scheme teaching the youth skills where employment didn’t exist. It seemed he was in a beneficial situation because he had continuously fucked over people in his life.

And for some reason he had called to complain to his son. About how hard and difficult his life had been. His son simply said, “You have a full-time job and own two houses. The job pays you to travel around the world. Why are you complaining?” He yelled at his son and said that it was his own fault for all of his problems. His father didn’t seem to understand and seemed completely justified in his own actions. To himself at least…
