The echo resort

[The Echo Resort, 1,491 words, Genre: Mind Fudge]

Louis had arrived at a hotel in Chang Mai. Chang Mai, Thailand, it was an odd state of affairs to be in. He arrived Sunday and there wasn’t much else that he could do with himself from living on the dole, working a casual job. He was attempting to do the best that he could possibly do. However, his best wasn’t good enough for other people. And that is why he found himself in Thailand. The land of the Thais and the land of smiles. He also loved the people and loved the culture. That is why he chose to work in Thailand.

However when he arrived there were things that he didn’t account for. The one thing that he didn’t account for was the hotel. Like the hotel California where you can never leave. The hotel had an odd presence surrounding it. Wherever he went in the hotel, Louis could feel it. The mist on the walls. The place was haunted. There was something in the air. Something that you could never account for. A deep, foreboding presence. The hotel itself was spiritually haunted, something had happened here. Nobody knew what had happened and Louis did not care to ask.

When he walked down the hallways there was a melody that would ring in his ears. The hotel itself was madness. A two storey villa, with a pool at the bottom of the two storey villa. The floor in the corridors were paved with cement. Everything was frisk and clean. A grand establishment, if ever one could see one.

Perhaps Louis was sensitive to these things or perhaps Louis had a fragile mind. He did not understand it. But everywhere he walked there were many odd things that were occurring for him. He felt that his behaviour had become possessed. Possessed by the hotel in which damned souls chose to live their existence. In quite a contrast to those who found themselves damned. It was not the poor, the impoverished who were damned. The truth was that the damned were financially successful. Or rather, they that threw luxuries upon themselves at no expense of self-control. A man or woman can be rich as long as they maintain themselves and show self-control. The truly damned… Those are men of wealth who do not have the discipline to control themselves. And this hotel… This hotel was a symbol of excess and opulence.

Ghosts walked these halls. Contorting the minds of mankind and making them act in a bizarre fashion.

When Louis began talking to one of the older men he realised what was occurring. The older man met him at the seven-eleven and sat him down.

“Now, you think you know, but you don’t.”

“Excuse me?” Louis was quite taken aback.

“I said you think you know, but you don’t.”

“I don’t know what exactly?”

“You  don’t know about it.”

“I don’t know about it?”

“Yes, it. The spirit that haunts this place. I call it my baby’s mumma.”

“Baby’s mumma?”

“Yes, my baby’s mumma. Do you want to know about it?”

“Not really.”

“Well, you already do.”

“I already do.”

“Yes, you already do. Let me tell you about it. The hotel is haunted by my baby’s mumma.”

“Your baby’s mumma? Who’s your baby’s mumma?”

“My baby’s mumma is the spirit that haunts the hotel. The hotel is haunted. She whispers in the night and screeches against the wind. She lives in the night and during the day she lives with others. But really it is never there. It is never there! It is never there!!!” The man grabbed Louis by the shirt collar and started to shake him. Shake him for all he was worth.

“You’re talking in riddles mate. I can’t understand you.”

“Yes, nobody understands us. We are just simply living in the night. Living for the heartbeat and breath of human flesh.”

“Human flesh?” Louis choked on his words.

“Yes, human flesh. She likes human flesh. She loves it.”

“Listen, I can’t understand you. What are you trying to say?” Louis asked.

“I am trying to say, I am trying to say…” The man curled up on the floor and started rocking back and forth. “Get out! Get out! Is what I’m trying to say.”

“I can’t understand anything… My mind, my mind is becoming a blank.” And that is when Louis started having convulsions on the floor. The world began to dissipate from around him. The world was drawing a blank. White washed across his mind’s eye and there was a figure there that he didn’t understand. He passed out on the floor. And then he began to dream.

In his dream, a figure, a woman, sat crying in the great fog of white screen that pervaded all. She sat there crying, crying… And then she turned to Louis, “Do you know why this place is the way it is?”

“I have no idea.” Louis made his way through the white screen. But no matter how close he felt in approaching the woman, she never felt that he was drawing closer to her. It was like running a treadmill. No matter how close you got to the figure, the figure always appeared at a distance. You could never get close to it. Never grasp it. It was some sort of spiritual phantasm.

“I hear an echo. I hear an echo.”

“Yeah, I get it. The eco resort right?”

“I hear an echo. I hear an echo.”

“Can you hear me?”

“Just an echo. But yes, I can hear you. This is the madness that exists. Let me tell you a story.”

“A story?”

“Yes, a story.”

“A true story?”

“As true as true can be and true is always a subjective term. I was living in this hotel. I was six months pregnant. I wasn’t expecting the child to arrive. But the child arrived early.”

“Yes, early. Three months and three days early to be precise. Three by three. Three by three. Three by three.”

As the spirit said the words, the words stopped making sense. Louis attempted to count how many times she had said it. He counted out loud, “One, two…” Louis couldn’t remember the number that came after the number two. He couldn’t remember. He just couldn’t remember. What the hell was going on?

The spirit began laughing at him. Wildly laughing at him. “You can’t count can you? You can’t count! This always happens. I wouldn’t worry about it much. When I had the child here, the child was doomed because it was born in a foreign country. And because it was born in a foreign country, I knew it could never return to its homeland. And so my husband and I decided to stay in the country.”

“How long were you planning on staying in the country?” Louis asked.

“Forever!!!” The spirit proclaimed.

Louis took a couple of steps backwards through the white screen that existed. Of course, the white screen only existed in his mind. It was all in his mind… This apparition, this phantasm. Though so often, more often than not, he could not distinguish truth from fiction. “What was the child’s name?”

“The child was cursed. It’s name. It’s name was Weston.”

“Weston? Why did you call it Weston?”

“Sounds like a good name, as good as any I would assume. I used to sing songs to it in its crib. A crib that we fashioned out of palms and straw. We would sing songs to it. Singing to it. ‘I believe in miracles’ is what I used to sing. The tune was written by the father. Who had been driven mad by the situation. I had also been driven mad by the situation.”

“What exactly are you trying to tell me here? What is the point of this exercise?”

“The point is… The point is…” The spirit intoned, “I forget what the point is.” The spirit scratched its head. “Oh, that’s right. Don’t travel while you’re pregnant. How many people forget that?”

“I’m not sure I understand.”

“This is not entertainment fool!” Then the spirit began to laugh wildly again. “This is a lesson!”

“A lesson in what exactly?”

“We have no idea… Just a lesson. A lesson to instruct control and promote happiness for those who have little perhaps.”

“What the hell are you talking about!?”

The spirit then started to sing again, ‘I believe in miracles,’ in an eerie voice. Then from that point the spirit snapped from its trance that it had created for itself. “I committed suicide one day. After a long period of time, I could no longer deal with the situation, and then I climbed the highest peak of the hotel, spread my arms and fell to the ground.”

After the spirit had said that. Louis woke up. His eyes awakened. Was it a ghost? Or was Louis haunted by his own life. One could never tell with these things.

Mental health experts criticise immigration detention at the time for being ‘too short and violent’, saying the treatment of asylum seekers had ‘devastated their mental health’.

On August 5 the Supreme Court ruled that detention of asylum seekers for over a month without charge violated human rights and the right to fair trial.

The court, in a 5-4 ruling, found the practice amounted to ‘cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment’ that violated the Convention Against Torture, as well as the right to a fair trial and freedom from cruel or degrading treatment or punishment.

It ruled that the asylum seekers were held in indefinite detention, without charge or trial as ‘dangerous prisoners’.

It’s not the first time it has been used as a tactic to detain migrants in Australia

In 2012, the federal immigration minister Andrew Penfold warned that the measure would be used to jail migrant workers, although he didn’t mention the issue specifically.

In February, the Australian immigration minister Scott Morrison said the detention was a measure that had ‘no place in Australia’, adding that it would remain on the books.

However, in September the federal government’s acting assistant commissioner of public prosecutions warned that the use of the “detention and exclusion orders” was ‘unsafe and unnecessary’ – as immigration officials can hold the migrants for up to three weeks and the asylum seekers for up to 14 days.

On August 3, the Immigration Department confirmed it had received the National Court ruling, adding that, in principle, asylum seekers held in immigration detention would be entitled to an appeal of the ruling.

This comes after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission warned last week that the ‘cruel’ conditions migrants were forced to live in for long periods were in breach of the rights of Australian consumers.

There are no data available to reveal the number of people held in detention across the world – or any numbers that are considered as safe or suitable for human contact.

It has also been a hot topic of debate in Australia, with the country’s National Police Commissioner telling a parliamentary hearing last year: “We’re under attack”.

Australia is a nation of immigrants and the country’s ‘national security’ was at the heart of asylum seekers’ demands for freedom – and this has put pressure on the Australian government.

It is estimated the Australian population of over 120 million can make an effective contribution to the security and wellbeing of the whole of our nation.

  5. Swine flu cases suspected in tasmanian waters have been traced back to two cases that took place over a span of five months and three of them were reported to be among the most recent,” Ms Leys said.

Image copyright SWNS Image caption Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said there was little to no research and funding involved

The new advice comes after some people were warned to avoid swimming at the weekend – and one resident even called in for a flu shot in an attempt to stop being sick.

One man’s health advice to his daughter prompted the State Health Service (SHS) to send out the “vaccination alert” message to families in the wake of the current outbreak.

On Tuesday, Mrs Leys said there had been a “small number of cases” of flu in Queensland in the past week but she could not rule them out.

She said more studies were needed to determine how much of an effect there could be.

Meanwhile, the number of cases has dropped to around 140 across Queensland from 1,000 in May.

Ms Leys said there was little to no research involved in collecting and preparing vaccine samples and some of the test kits that were used had become contaminated.

Wa prison guard stood down after inmate falls pregnant

WATERBURY, Ky. (WHAS11) — A Waterbury woman will serve 15 months in prison after she fell pregnant. The crime was caught on camera but it could not be released until investigators had finished the investigation.

“What’s really going to go through your head is she did something stupid,” said Waterbury Police Department Lt. Mike Ralston. “She was stupid, and now they’re going to put her in jail for it.”

When officers arrested 22-year-old Shaina Bynum on Jan. 6, 2011 they found her down in the middle of the street at her home on Highway 2.

Police say an employee at a grocery store got her pregnant, and she left the store to drive away with the worker. Officers called Waterbury police to talk to Bynum. The suspect was later arrested, although the investigation was not complete until February, four months after she was arrested.

“A lot of people think that’s crazy,” Ralston said. “It’s kind of like someone that did something stupid, and then after the fact, that was their worst nightmare.”

It was at Waterbury police headquarters where they got another tip to assist in the investigation. They called a neighbor and she helped them complete the investigation into Bynum’s home. Police were able to collect all of Bynum’s belongings from her property and even put her apartment in an arrears report.

The Waterbury police officer at the scene in Waterbury said it was unusual for the suspect to drive home alone and be caught.

“As a police officer I’m used to seeing my own police force, and I’m used to being called upon to help, but when a police officer is someone that has a child, then that’s a little different,” said Sergeant Mike Cramer.

The officer at the Waterbury police station says they’re taking the case extremely seriously and a new person has been called. It’s not known when it will be heard, but there are plans to continue doing the investigations.

  9. Unauthorised research earns doctor stern reprimand.”

It’s not hard to see how a little sleuthing could help uncover this mystery. Indeed it should be. So here are three tips from Dr. Martin Schoeller, professor of psychiatry and chief of the department of psychiatry at Columbia University, who’s been following the story. The first, the most obvious, is to seek out research that has been conducted by reputable, accredited and funded research organisations. He explains how this could be done, and why.

“When you investigate a matter for which you know nothing, it makes sense to turn to independent groups that would probably not have come across something so strange.”

He adds: “You could go to the US and look through research records in the field. Maybe the only place I’ve seen these kinds of results was in Germany.” If you could go back through and find the references, it would be helpful to look for areas that are particularly important to you or in which you might want to focus your interest. There are a lot of good research organisations out there.”

As for the second tip, it seems to me that this should be pretty easy for any of us who can remember how the media did everything that came to our attention a few decades ago, but which, of course, seem no more relevant than the information that just came out on Ebola. You don’t have to spend hours a day on the Internet searching through the results to be certain that you did find something surprising, so why bother?

How can we be certain that you didn’t find something we did not find?

Well, it’s not easy to just Google a particular phrase – unless you’re actually in the news, in which case you need to go back and look for it first. But that is no way to find out for sure. It’s as if someone started looking for the word “fart” back when we all were kids, and that search went only to a website that only lists phrases you’ve heard before.

And in fact when it comes to searching around for information you have come to trust, and you may want to do the same, the truth is that what comes out can be a little hard to understand or even to know what you’re looking for unless you really go into the internet hard enough to search for it. If the internet is any indication, we really want to know what we’re looking for, and if the internet doesn’t suggest that, you should probably give up and try something else. (Or read the article on PubMed).

Another tip comes from someone who’s done what I’ve just mentioned, and he’s found it all by himself when he searched for the phrase “craniofacial dysplasia” online last September. “Afte

  10. Tiger triumphs after eight month lay off, beating the other dogs at the dog track

One last look at the top dog and his team

A good dog looks great in his cage, but can a great one ever leave?

This week, we get our first look at the world’s two best dogs after they beat off the other dogs to claim a second win at the Derby last month.

It was a remarkable feat for three-time defending champion the golden retriever, who has already claimed seven wins at the event, including a silver medal at last year’s U3-K9-E3.

Fellow German shepherd and four-time champion Max, the two-year-old terrier also won his opening round, having claimed the event’s final spot on Sunday.

Superhuman: The German Shepherd Max will go down in history as one of the dogs to win two of the past four Dog races

The first of these three, last year’s U3-K9-E3 took place on Monday, February 24th at Wembley Stadium in London, and the team from the Royal Dog Trackers Association in Oxfordshire were thrilled that they are finally making history at the Derby – with the three finalists earning a medal

The dogs have had to put on a few pounds to cope with the summer of racing, and even though the weather is warm this week it isn’t as hot as last year and the weather is predicted to be perfect by the time the dogs go onto the track on Wednesday morning.

But as soon as we get our first chance to see the dogs and watch them work out on the track, it’s clear they have no problem.

‘I don’t think any of us thought that we’d ever have to take our dogs out on a day like this,’ said owner David Hill. ‘We thought we would be in some sort of holiday house.

‘We put them into a crate, but it’s nothing like a holiday house. This is where they feel they belong.

‘It’s not easy, but they’re working with the best. We’re a tight family, and it’s never easy losing these amazing dogs.

‘It’s crazy when you have to put them out in the heat to race, and have to make sure they are fit and healthy. For a four-time Olympic champion and the winner of the 2012 Dog race, it’s something that’s unbelievable.

‘The last four years have been crazy, but it has been one hell of a ride for the dogs – and it was even crazier just four months ago.’

For the rest of the event, they got a new home, and the new home will soon be waiting fo

The planes – which will be delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force next month – will be flown on a single route on the ground to be used by air crews on operations and training missions.

Qantas is a popular carrier for the company and its fleet is on display at Melbourne’s new Qantas Centrefold from next month.

In a bid to maintain air traffic flow in Melbourne, a number of aircraft will fly at high altitudes over a period of days to provide a variety of services, from ground crews on operations and training flights to air traffic controllers at airports.

“This is Qantas flying – there will be no traffic, no delays,” the Qantas spokesman said.

“All planes will be flying at 100km/h, there will be no noise and no smoke, and none of the aircraft may crash.

“We think it will be a very enjoyable experience for people flying there – not just for the passengers but for Qantas staff on the ground as well,” he said.

    Business optimistic despite global uncertainty

Global economic uncertainty was at least partially due to uncertainty surrounding the future of European economies, according to one survey conducted by the Institute for Fiscal Studies. In that survey, 60 percent of economists said they thought the world would experience a downturn in the next few years, which may mean economic growth would slow significantly. More than 60 percent of experts who spoke to IPS said that economic growth will only slow during the second half of 2016 and then slowly regain its momentum after a slow start to 2015. The economic outlook is especially gloomy for Europe, which sees the number of young people headed for unemployment rise by roughly 20 million in 2016, with the country forecast to have a total population of about 1.5 billion people.

Failed to attract young people, says survey

According to the survey, only 17 percent of economists thought that Europe had attracted enough skilled workers through education since the early 1990s to meet its youth and job expectations, while only 18 percent said that. According to a separate study carried out in early 2014, only 11 percent of economists felt that Europe needed to do more to attract and retain young people.

Failing to attract young people, says survey

In the face of those findings, the European Central Bank has proposed raising interest rates in order to encourage more investment, particularly in areas that are not as young as those in Europe, or for developing countries to diversify their labor supply by creating opportunities for young people. But even if ECB policy does stimulate, this may not be sufficient to offset the slowing economy; in fact, by the end of 2016, growth is expected to slow considerably because the eurozone is likely to have a growth rate of almost 2 percent, not yet as high as the United States.

Failed to attract young people, says survey

The recent plunge in global oil prices may have done more than any recession or economic downturn to force Europe to retreat from investing in itself. The fall in oil prices led to falling foreign demand for the continent’s services and also, in the short-term, to the decline in the value of the currency the region’s companies use. For example, the drop in U.S. stock prices is believed to have resulted in several German banks delaying new projects, while a recent study showed that the number of jobs in Germany rose by only 0.6 percent in the first quarter of 2015 after falling by a smaller 0.4 percent in the first three months of last year. In the context of those factors, any additional spending on infrastructure that might have added up to a lot of growth in 2016 may have also been put into jeopardy.

Failed to attract young people, says survey

In addition to the short-term benefits the European Union receives for its investment climate, it will no

A second-round pick in 2012, Jones was signed to stay with the Roosters before training with the Raiders the season after joining them in June.

The club said during the season the 27-year-old wanted to make the Raiders one of the four finalists in their chase for finals football again.

“That’s where we have put him and it is one of the biggest things we do is try to get him as close as we possibly can to playing NRL and playing for the Roosters in the next round or so,” coach Des Hasler said.

“He certainly can play centre forward and fullback, so he’s certainly one we can look at in our squad going into the next round.”

Roosters coach Trent Robinson said Jones’ arrival was vital to his quest to remain in charge of the club.

“I thought when we started the conversations with John and my first reaction was, he’s going to do well,” Robinson told the Roosters Radio show at their training base at Maroons Stadium.

“I’ll just say this, John (Roderick) and I didn’t do a whole lot during the first 12 days in Canberra to ask the right questions and try to understand him to know how he was at that time.

“I asked him, ‘Is this your first team?’ He said yes, ‘Is this your first year?’ We looked at his fitness and said, ‘How has he been? Have you gone through our fitness program?’ He looked at me and said, ‘Yes, I’ve done everything’. He’s a player that’s got all the tools in his bag.”

Robinson said he had hoped the Raiders had “a chance to turn their season around”.

“We’re all very disappointed with the season that has come to an end,” he said. “We’ve got a number of players that we thought could have played and not quite done, so it leaves us with players at all levels who are just looking to get back into our team and try and make a name for ourselves.”

The doctors say there is no medical reason why NP doctors should have been allowed to perform surgery. “The doctors have accepted that some surgical operations may have to be performed by non-practitioners but they have accepted that they are not needed,” said the doctor.A letter to the Medical Termination Authority from the Medical Termination Authority of India (MTA) said its members will not be able to perform surgical operations under any circumstances, as “medical ethics dictate that a patient can be discharged from the hospital immediately”. According to the letter, the MTA considers NP members to be “non-practitioners who could not be trusted to perform surgery, but who are still allowed to join practice”, adding that “the state has no legal obligation to permit any doctor from outside the state” to perform surgery in the hospital.”The practice of non-practitioner doctors in the state is not allowed, despite the Ministry of Health saying it is necessary in light of the new law, that was passed on September 8.
