Blessed are the incompetent

Luke and George sat on the patio, drinking beer after another working week. They talked about their families, their wives, their favourite sports teams and all the in-betweens and outs of life. Eventually the conversation turned to work, the people at work and the different aspects of their working lives.

“Mate, I am so sick and tired of all these bloody incompetent nanas at work. It’s goddamned ridiculous.” Luke complained.

“Hey mate, without those incompetent nanas, you might not have a job.” George stated.

“What do you mean?”

“Well, think about it, if everyone was competent, they’d need a lot less people to do the job that you and the rest of them are set out to do. Most jobs exist because of incompetent people. Realistically, most jobs that are worked with four people can be achieved by one competent person. In that situation you have a struggle between businesses and the workforce. The businesses would rather hire one competent person instead of the four who pick-up after one another. This puts added stress on the one competent person in the workforce if this were to be achieved. For even incompetent people do produce some work. With this added strain, there are all sorts of health related problems inherent in the position of the competent person. Most manager’s jobs only exist because of incompetency in the workforce. If the managers were able to successfully train a competent workforce, their job would be made redundant.”

“I guess that makes sense.”

“Wait, I’m not finished. The businesses wish for incompetency to be eradicated because this means higher profit margins for themselves. But then why, as a competent worker, would you do the work of four incompetent people to make someone else rich?”

“Wait… What about things like medical services, you don’t want incompetent people working that field.”

“That’s true. There are many vocations where you don’t want incompetent people. But for some areas, it’s a bonus. You see the more incompetent people that businesses have to employ, the less stress on the individual worker and a better quality of life on a national level.”

“How does incompetency create a better quality of life on a national level?”

“Well, the more people that are employed, the more people that have access to a dispensable income; it all allows for more opportunities to occur. With all these stupid, incompetent people running around with a bunch of money, the more opportunity exists for businesses that create stupid products to sell them to the incompetent people. It’s the flow of the economy. Half the shit that exists at a manufacturing level to assist people with their daily living requirements, you don’t actually need to live a fulfilling life. Have you ever seen those late night infomercials selling the latest gadget or gizmo. Well, people actually buy those things. The very same people who think they need those things are the incompetent people. The incompetent people usually have high paying jobs and it’s better off that way because they’re more readily willing to distribute their expendable income on these sorts of products.”

“I don’t agree that the incompetent people have high paying jobs.”

“It’s not across the board, but with many vocations it’s the truth. In essence though, the more people employed, the better quality of life there is, as it means more potential moneys to be passed from hand to hand. The more competent people that exist, the less people that need to be employed, decreasing the quality of life on a national level.”

“You know George, I’ve never really thought about it that way.” Luke said with a smile.

“That’s right mate, blessed be, incompetency.”
