Hannah was a curious youngster, curious to a fault. She was only young and secrets were going around the primary school. Everyone had a secret and she had to know them all. She would do anything to know people’s secrets. She would buy the other girl’s lollies, she would kiss all the boys. Eventually one by one she was able to collect and gather all of the other children’s secrets. Then one day a new girl came to the school, Sarah. Sarah loved skipping and would go around skipping around the school. When Sarah found out that Hannah had to know everyone’s secrets, she would skip around the school taunting Hannah. She would sing, “I’ve got a secret, I’ve got a secret.”

Hannah would go up to her and ask, “Can you tell me your secret?”

And Sarah would ask, “I don’t know, what will you do for me?”

“I’ll buy you lollies.”

“No, that’s not going to do it.” It had worked with all the other children, why didn’t it work with Sarah?

Sarah would taunt Hannah all day by skipping around the school and singing, “I’ve got a secret, I’ve got a secret.” Even in class when Sarah sat behind Hannah she would hum the song to her. Taunting and teasing her further, “I’ve got a secret, I’ve got a secret.”

“Sarah, please tell me your secret.” Hannah would beg.

“I don’t know, what will you do for me?”

“I will kiss you.”

“No, that’s not going to do.”

“I will be your best friend.”

“No, that’s not going to do. Think of the worst thing you can do and then maybe, maybe I’ll tell you.”

Hannah went home that night and thought about the worst thing that she could possibly do. She thought and thought and couldn’t think of anything. Then her cat came to rub itself up against her leg, that’s when she got the idea.

The next day at school, she went to Sarah, “Sarah, won’t you tell me your secret.”

“I don’t know Hannah, what will you do for me?”

“I’ll kill the cat.”

“Okay Hannah, if you kill the cat I’ll tell you my secret.”

The next day Hannah came to school, she was flustered and she looked different. She went to Sarah and said, “Okay, I’ve done it. I killed the cat. Tell me your secret now.”

“Ha, you killed the cat.”

“What’s the secret?”

“The secret, huh, there is no secret.” And Sarah walked away.

Hannah went home that day to find that her parent’s had found the dead cat. They found out that Hannah had killed the cat. Hannah’s father went to place the cat in the garbage bin. The neighbour asked Hannah’s father what it was in his hand. He replied, “The cat, the cat is dead.”

“Really, what killed the cat?”

The father slammed the trash lid down on the trash can, “Curiosity. Curiosity killed the cat.”
